The Prowers County is a county in the east of the State of Colorado . The county seat is the county's largest city, Lamar .

geography

The county is located in southeast Colorado on the border with the US state Kansas . It borders Kiowa County in the north and Prowers County in the south Baca County. To the east are the counties of Hamilton and Stanton (both Kansas).

history

The county is named after John W. Prowers , a pioneer who explored the Lower Arkansas Valley . It was created in 1889 from the division of Bent County .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 14,483 people. There were 5,307 households and 3,725 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.57 percent white, 0.30 percent African American, 1.22 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 17.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.34 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 32.91 percent of the total population.

Of the 5,307 households, 37.4 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.9 percent were single mothers. 29.8 percent were not families. 25.4 percent were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.21.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 30.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 10.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 20.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 101.0 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.7 males.

The median income for a household in the 29,935 USD , and the median income for a family was 34,202 USD. Males had a median income of $ 24,971 versus $ 20,526 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,150. 19.5 percent of the population and 14.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 27.1 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 13.9 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
