The Baca County is the southeastern administrative unit in the state of Colorado in the United States , which like the state itself has an almost uniform border in the form of a rectangle. The county seat is in Springfield .

geography

The county is located south of the Arkansas River , bordered by Las Animas to the west and Bent and Prowers to the north. The district boundaries in the south and east are also the state borders of Colorado, to which the countries Kansas , Oklahoma and in the southwest to a very small part New Mexico connect. Baca emerged from the eastern part of Las Animas in 1889 and has its administrative headquarters in Springfield.

The county had a population of 4,517 people as of the 2000 census . There were 1,905 households and 1,268 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.73 percent white, 0.04 percent African American, 1.20 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.99 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.79 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 7.02 percent of the population.

Of the 1,905 households, 28.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.5 percent were single mothers. 33.4 percent were not families. 30.4 percent were single households and 15.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.90.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 22.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 99.0 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,099 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,018. Males had a median income of $ 23,169 versus $ 18,292 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,068. 16.9 percent of the population and 12.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 21.6 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 13.3 percent of the population aged 65 and over.

The largest city in the administrative district - with just around 1,500 inhabitants - is Springfield , which is also the home of the administrative center. With the exception of Walsh, all other places are smaller settlements.
