The Kiowa County is a county in the east of the US state Colorado . The county seat is Eads .

geography

The county is surrounded by Counties of Cheyenne to the north, Lincoln to the northwest, Crowley to the east, Otero to the southwest, Bent and Prowers to the south. Greeley County (Kansas) lies behind the state border in the east .

history

In 1864, before the county and Colorado were founded, the Sand Creek massacre took place in the middle of today's county . In the Colorado War, this was initially referred to as the victorious battle of the whites against enemy Indians. However, research has shown that the killing of old people and children was involved. Both the Governor John Evans (1814-1897) and the commanding Colonel John Chivington were held responsible. The county name comes from the Kiowa Indians.

From around 1880, Kiowa County became an agricultural center of Colorado and remained so until the beginning of the 20th century. This was also favored by the railway line running through the county.

Today the area is almost deserted, only Eads is a notable settlement here. Other settlements are threatened with permanent abandonment. This could lead to a regression of Kiowa County to the state it was before intensive cultivation: prairie with nutrient-poor grasslands.
