The Eagle County [ ˈiːgl̩ ] ( English for eagle ) is a county in the central to northwestern part of the US state Colorado . The county seat is Eagle .

geography

Eagle County is named after the Eagle River - an eastern tributary of the Colorado River - which flows through the district from west to southeast and in whose catchment area most of the housing developments are located. South of the Eagle lies the Sawatch Range , a densely forested range of mountains in the Rocky Mountains that has been declared the White River National Forest . To the east, the highest peaks of the Gore Range form the natural district boundary to Summit .

Encircling the county in a clockwise direction is Grand (Northeast), Summit , Lake , Pitkin , Garfield, and Routt Counties .

history

The administrative unit was created in 1883 from the western region of the Summit district, which today only comprises a very small district west of Eagle, but at the time extended to the state border with Utah , where the areas are now under the administration of Rio Blanco and Garfield.
