John Russel

John (Jack) Russell (born December 12, 1795 in Dartmouth , Devon , England , † April 28, 1883 ) was a British pastor and dog breeder .

Russell was a pastor and lived most of his life in Swymbridge, Devon. He was a great rider and hunter and had dedicated himself to breeding terriers . In 1873 he was one of the founding members of the Kennel Club . He was also a respected judge at breed shows , including fox terriers . He died at the age of 87. The royal family expressed their condolences and around 1000 farmers from the area gave him his last escort .

John Russell is mainly known for giving his name to two dog breeds, the Jack Russell Terrier and the slightly larger Parson Russell Terrier .
