Terrier is the name of various dog breeds, mainly small to medium-sized . Terriers were originally hunting dogs that were bred to drive foxes and badgers out of their underground burrows. The name terrier is derived from the French term terre ( earth ). Today's terrier breeds are bred for different purposes, many of the breeds, but not all of them, show pronounced hunting behavior, with some there are different breeding lines for dogs for hunting or family dogs .

The following list is a compilation of terrier breeds. For breeds recognized by the FCI , the group, the section and the number of the breed standard according to the FCI nomenclature are given in brackets . Most terrier breeds are grouped together in FCI group 3 .
