List of domestic dogs

The Lakeland Terrier is an FCI recognized British breed of dog ( FCI Group 3, Section 1, Standard No. 70 ).

Origin and history

The origin of the Lakeland Terrier lies in the Lake District (lake district) in northern England: the farmers there needed a fearless, small dog to hunt foxes. Therefore, from the beginning of the 19th century, they crossed the Bedlington Terrier into the original Old English Black and Tan Terriers in order to improve their character. In addition, the Border Terrier was bred because of its wiry, water-repellent fur . The result was an agile and courageous little dog that could find the foxes in caves and mountain ranges . By the time the Lakeland Terrier was finally given its current name in 1912, it had already had many baptisms: Fell Terrier, Cumberland Terrier or Westmoreland Terrier were just a few of its names. However, when the breeders finally reached an agreement, the Lakeland Terrier had not yet received any official recognition. This only took place in 1928 through the Kennel Club . In England and the USA , this terrier breed was once a very popular show dog in addition to its hunting dog existence , but its population has declined somewhat in recent years. Lakeland is still rare in Germany.

description

The sturdy and tough dog , which is similar to the Welsh Terrier , should not grow taller than 37 cm (14.5 ins ) and weigh around 7 to 8 kg. Lakeland Terriers have dense wire hair with a soft undercoat and can be seen in different colors. The palette ranges from red, wheat, black and tan, to blue and tan, to red grizzle, blue, liver-colored or all black. The small ears are carried tilted forward. Its neck is long and slightly arched, its back short and straight. Overall, he looks compact and muscular. The Lakeland Terrier demeanor is fearless, nimble, and full of confidence.

Essence

A Lakeland Terrier is a happy, friendly, playful, skillful dog. He is confident and bold and a good guardian. He loves the water and likes to jump in ditches and ponds. Not only patience, but above all consistency are required in education.

Keeping and care

As puppies, these terriers still have a soft coat, but at around 18 weeks they get their wire hair. From this point on, they should be trimmed every 3 to 4 months. Otherwise, Lakeland Terriers need a lot of exercise, but they don't have to run a specific amount of work every day to stay calm. If you get used to it as a puppy, they can stay alone in the apartment every now and then.
