List of domestic dogs

The Miniature Bull Terrier is an FCI recognized dog breed from Great Britain ( FCI Group 3, Section 3, Standard No. 359 ).

Origin and history

Origin and history correspond to that of the Bull Terrier . A smaller type of Bull Terrier had been known since the early 19th century, but was no longer popular before World War I and was removed from the Kennel Club breed register in 1918. In 1938 a resuscitation of Colonel Richard Glyn and a group of like-minded prospects was sought, who formed the Miniature Bull Terrier Club.

On July 5, 2011, the FCI followed the British model and recognized the Miniature Bull Terrier as an independent breed. The Miniature Bull Terrier is counted among the breeds threatened with extinction in the country of origin Great Britain and has been included in the "vulnerable native breeds" list since 2006.

description

In the case of the Miniature Bull Terrier, unlike the standard bull terrier, the size is specified in the breed standard. The FCI breed standard differs from the standard of the Bull Terrier in the following paragraph: "The height at the withers should not exceed 35.5 cm. There should be an impression of substance in relation to the size of the dog. There is no weight limit. The dogs should always be harmonious be."

Health issues

In the Miniature Bull Terrier there is a tendency to a genetically determined weakness of the suspension system of the eye lens and thus to a lens displacement , possibly with secondary glaucoma . There is a genetic test to detect this eye disease.

Legal situation

Unlike the Bull Terrier, the Miniature Bull Terrier is not on any of the German breed lists . In Germany there are no legal restrictions on breeding and keeping this breed.

In the report of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2010 it is stated that the officially registered miniature bull terriers did not lead to any incidents in which humans or animals were harmed. Furthermore it is stated there that miniature bull terriers belong to the type "small dogs". An official determination of the danger is possible in individual cases.

Even before the Miniature Bull Terrier was recognized as a separate breed in the FCI, there were legal disputes as to whether the dogs fall under the provisions of the respective breed lists. The legal situation in North Rhine-Westphalia regarding the relevance of the height at the withers and compliance with the FCI standards in breeding is controversial if the specific animal is larger than the breed standard provides. A case is pending in Berlin in which the definition of a dog as a bull terrier instead of a miniature bull terrier is used as the basis for making decisions about the assessment as a list dog.

In Switzerland , the miniature bull terrier is explicitly mentioned as a list dog on the breed list of the canton of Basel-Stadt . The canton of Zurich , on the other hand, explicitly excludes him from its breed list. The other cantons that have the Bull Terrier as a list dog ( AG , BL , FR , GL , SH , SO , TG , TI and VS ) do not provide any information on whether the Miniature Bull Terrier is also considered dangerous.
