The Australian Silky Terrier is an Australian breed of dog recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale ( FCI Group 3, Section 4, Standard No. 236 ).

Origin and history

The breed originally emerged from crossing the Australian Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier . The resulting silky-haired bitch was exported to England. There she was mated several times with the Dandie Dinmont Terrier . Some offspring were bought by a Mr. McArthur Little, who bred a terrier type with a fine, silky coat and crossed it with the Skye Terrier . He emigrated to Sydney, Australia, and continued his breeding experiments there. In 1904 the first Australian Terrier Club was renamed the Victorian Silky and Yorkshire Terrier Club. He referred to the breed as the Victorian Silky Terrier . Two years later another club was founded in Sydney. He referred to the breed as the Sydney Silky Terrier . The breed standards issued by these two clubs differed on several points. In 1955, on the recommendation of the Australian Kennel Control Council (AKCC), a uniform standard with a uniform name was designed. Four years later, the breed received its official recognition and was renamed the Australian Silky Terrier .
