List of domestic dogs

The Australian Terrier is an FCI recognized Australian breed of dog ( FCI Group 3, Section 2, Standard No. 8 ).

Origin and history

The Australian Terrier is a 19th century breed and is believed to be descended from the Yorkshire Terrier , the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and the Cairn Terrier (to which it is most similar) crossed with the native Sydney Silky . It was first exhibited at a dog show in Melbourne in 1880 . He first appeared in England in 1906, and breeding began in 1921 after the establishment of the Australian Terrier Club , which established its breeding standard .

Appearance

Puppy, 12 weeks old, still missing fur

A strong, low-standing dog (25 cm, 6.5 kg), the body is long in relation to the height of the shoulder and has a strong build with a distinctive terrier character; he has a harsh coat of hair with a distinct frizz around his neck. The body hair consists of harsh, straight, dense outer hair of approximately 6 cm in length and a short undercoat of soft texture in the colors blue, steel blue or dark gray blue (each with a deep tan), sand-colored or red (without brown). The more intense and clearly defined the color, the better. The hair is blue, silver or has the color of the scalp hair in a lighter shade, sand-colored or red. The head is covered with a soft head of hair, the ears are small, erect and pointed. Puppies are black when they are born, and their fur gradually changes color. The characteristic "fur ruff" around the neck is only fully developed at the age of three.

character

The Australian Terrier is a robust, alert, also reckless, happy and affectionate dog. He is very intelligent and easy to raise. He is open to people, even if a little cautious at first. He is easy going with children and rarely quarrelsome with other dogs.

use

The Australian Terrier was originally bred in its homeland specifically for hunting rats and snakes. He had to be able to kill them very quickly. He is a watchful, tenacious, and robust dog.

Despite their relatively small size, these dogs are also used in groups for herding flocks of sheep. Held as a companion dog , he should be given long walks in order to do justice to his nature as a working dog . Because of its quick learning ability and activity, the Australian Terrier lends itself well to dog sports.
