The Boston Terrier is an FCI recognized dog breed from the USA ( FCI Group 9, Section 11, Standard No. 140 ). The breed has been the official state dog of the US state of Massachusetts since 1979 .

Origin and history

This breed of dog was created in the United States in the 1870s and was called the Boston Bulldog. It originated from a cross between the now extinct White English Terrier and the English Bulldog . For further improvement, the French bulldogs were also crossed later . In 1878 it was presented at an exhibition in Boston and was named Boston Terrier by the American Kennel Club in 1891 . In 1927 he came to Europe. He stayed there for a long time, but the number of puppies has increased in recent years: 95 puppies were littered in the VDH in 1998, in 2007 there were already 238 puppies, and by 2010 the number rose to 322 puppies.

description

The Boston Terrier is muscular with a compact body with powerful and dignified movements. It is available in three weight classes; there is no official information about shoulder height. It has short, smooth, shiny, soft fur, brindle , black or " seal " (black with a reddish sheen that can only be seen in sunlight or other bright light), with white markings on the muzzle, chest and above the eyes. Often these "markings" are also found on the neck, feet and the lower part of the legs. The massive head has a flat skull with a short, square muzzle, and large, round, dark eyes. The large, standing ears in relation to the body size are characteristic. The tail is set relatively low, short, fine and tapering, not docked. (The cropping of ears and tail is prohibited in Germany and many other countries.)

use

Despite its name "Terrier", the Boston Terrier is not a hunting dog . The breed standard states that he is friendly, lively, and intelligent, which is why he is a unique companion dog .
