The Moffat County is a county in the state of Colorado of the United States . The county seat is Craig .

Moffa County is also where most of the Dinosaur National Monument is located .

The county in the far northwest of Colorado borders Wyoming to the north and Utah to the west and covers an area of 12,305 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Sweetwater County , Carbon County , Routt County , Rio Blanco County , Uintah County, and Daggett County .

history

Moffat County was formed in 1911 from parts of Routt County . The county was named after David H. Moffat , a Colorado industrialist. Its Denver, Northwestern & Pacific railroad tried to build a line from Denver to Salt Lake City . In 1913 the reorganized Denver & Salt Lake Railroad finally reached its final stop in Craig . This was less than half the originally planned route to Salt Lake City.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 13,184 people. There were 4,983 households and 3,577 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.61 percent white, 0.21 percent African American, 0.88 percent Native American, 0.33 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 3.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.77 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 9.46 percent of the total population.

Of the 4,983 households, 38.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.2 percent were single mothers. 28.2 percent were not families. 23.6 percent were single households and 8.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.05.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 107.7 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 106.2 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,528 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,511. Males had a median income of $ 37,288 versus $ 22,080 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,540. 8.3 percent of the population and 6.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 8.3 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 9.3 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
