The Delta County is an administrative unit ( county ) in the western part of the US state of Colorado . The county seat is Delta , the largest city in the county.

The county is south of the Colorado River of the same name . It covers a region in the northeastern part of the Colorado Plateau and is enclosed by the districts of Mesa in the north and west, Montrose in the south and Gunnison in the east.

The administrative district is traversed in the southwest by the 290 km long Gunnison , in whose catchment area there are smaller settlements. In southeastern Delta still has a small share of the West Elk Mountains , while the north of the dense forests of the national forests Grand Mesa ( Large tableland ) and Gunnison is.

history

The county was formed in 1883 together with Mesa and Montrose from Gunnison, which is now to the east and to which all three administrative districts belonged at the time.

As of the 2000 census , the county had a population of 27,834. There were 11,058 households and 7,939 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.29 percent white, 0.52 percent African American, 0.76 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.83 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.39 percent of the population.

Of the 11,058 households, 29.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.3 percent were married couples living together, 7.9 percent were single mothers. 28.2 percent were not families. 24.8 percent were single households and 12.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.89 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 19.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.6 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,785 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,748. Males had a median income of $ 31,348 versus $ 19,916 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,152. 12.1 percent of the population and 8.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 15.0 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 9.6 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
