Fremont County [ ˈfɹiːmɑːnt ] is a county in the central to southern part of the state of Colorado in the United States . The county seat is Cañon City .

Fremont County is partly in the Sangre-de-Cristo Mountains , a range of Rocky Mountains that extends into the district in the southwest to the river valleys of Arkansas . The west of Fremont is a pure mountainous landscape in which there are only a few very small settlements along the Arkansas.
It lies in the easternmost part of the Rocky Mountains and is enclosed in a clockwise direction by the districts of Teller (northeast), El Paso , Pueblo , Custer , Saguache , Chaffee, and Park .
history
Fremont, named after the US politician and explorer John Charles Frémont , is one of the 17 original administrative units in the newly formed Colorado Territory in 1861 . It originally reached in the south as far as the Costilla district , but initially ceded areas to the newly founded Huerfano district in 1870 , more to Custer in 1877, and finally a very small part to Teller in the northeast in 1899 .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 46,145 people. There were 15,232 households and 10,494 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.52 percent white, 5.34 percent African American, 1.53 percent Native American, 0.50 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.22 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.82 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.35 percent of the total population.
Of the 15,232 households, 30.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers. 31.1 percent were not families. 26.9 percent were single households and 12.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.93.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 33.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 133.9 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 143.5 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,150 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,303. Males had a median income of $ 30,428 versus $ 23,112 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,420. 11.7 percent of the population and 8.3 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 14.8 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 7.4 percent of the population aged 65 and over.

The largest city of Fremont is Cañon City with around 16,000 inhabitants, which, together with Lincoln Park on the other side of the Arkansas, forms a small metropolitan area in which almost half of all Fremont residents live. The second largest place is Penrose, like Lincoln Park, not an independent city, but an officially established place for the census ( census-designated place ).
