The Montrose County is a county in the state of Colorado of the United States . It was named after the city of Montrose , where the county seat is also located.

The county is located in western Colorado and has an area of 5,808 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Mesa County , Delta County , Gunnison County , Ouray County , San Miguel County, and San Juan County, Utah .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 33,432 people. There were 13,043 households and 9,312 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.96 percent white, 0.31 percent African American, 1.02 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.74 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 14.86 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 13,043 households, 32.5 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers. 28.6 percent were not families. 24.3 percent were single households and 11.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.00.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.8 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.0 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.0 males.

The median income for a household in the 35,234 USD , and the median income for a family was 40,849 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,945 versus $ 21,423 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,158. 12.6 percent of the population and 8.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 16.5 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 9.8 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
