The Huerfano County (from Spanish huérfano , orphan ) is a county in the southern part of the US state Colorado . The county seat is Walsenburg .

history

Huerfano County is one of the 17 original administrative units that emerged in the new territory of Colorado in 1861. In 1866 much of the county was spun off to Las Animas County. Temporarily (1870) another part was outsourced and with the reservations of the Cheyenne and the Arapaho to Greenwood County. As early as 1874, the county was broken up again and added to the Bent and Douglas counties at that time . The county is named after the Huerfano River ( River of the Orphans ).

The Spanish Peaks Wilderness , which was created on January 1, 2000, is located in the county, an area of ​​72.3 square kilometers south of Walsenburg. The two Spanish Peaks (the West Spanish Peak, 4,153 meters, and the East Spanish Peak, 3,866 meters) rise above the arid plain. In the Wilderness Area, an area under the administration of the US government, the use of motorized machines is largely prohibited; only minimally invasive activities are permitted. Hunting and fishing tourism is certainly possible. The county is bounded clockwise by Counties Pueblo to the northeast, Las Animas to the east and south, Costilla to the southwest, Alamosa to the west, Saguache to the northwest and Custer to the north.

As of the 2000 census , the county had 7,862 people. There were 3,082 households and 1,920 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.96 percent white, 2.75 percent African American, 2.70 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 9.41 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 35.14 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,082 households, 25.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 48.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers. 37.7 percent were not families. 32.8 percent were single households and 14.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.85.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 118.8 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 122.8 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,775 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,664. Males had a median income of $ 24,209 versus $ 21,048 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,242. 18.0 percent of the population and 14.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 23.7 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 11.9 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
