Vladimír Neff

Vladimír Neff (born June 13, 1909 in Prague ; † July 2, 1983 there ) was a Czech writer, translator, screenwriter and father of the writer Ondřej Neff .

Life

As the child of a wealthy entrepreneurial family, he attended elite general school, then, from 1921 to 1925, the secondary school and until 1928 the business academy in Geneva . After graduating, he worked in a warehouse in a Viennese porcelain factory and in a department store in Bremen . In 1935 he started as a foreign language lecturer at the Melantrich publishing house , but only stayed there until 1939. Since then, he has lived only from writing.

Works

His first works appeared in the second half of the 30 years. These are parodies of detective novels and political satire. During the German occupation he was involved in the creation of the philosophical dictionary Filosofický slovník pro samouky neboli Antigorgias , which appeared shortly after the communist revolution in 1948. His best works are historical novels, he also translates from French, German and Russian and writes film scripts.
