The San Miguel County is a county in the state of Colorado of the United States . The county seat is Telluride .

The county in southwest Colorado borders Utah to the west and has an area of 3,337 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Montrose County , Ouray County , San Juan County, Colorado , Dolores County, and San Juan County, Utah .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 6,594 people. There were 3,015 households and 1,423 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.57 percent white, 0.29 percent African American, 0.85 percent Native American, 0.74 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.11 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 6.66 percent of the total population.
Of the 3,015 households, 22.8 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 38.3 percent were married couples living together, 5.4 percent were single mothers. 52.8 percent were not families. 32.7 percent were single households and 2.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.77 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 17.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 43.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 3.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 120.8 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 126.4 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 48,514 , and the median income for a family is $ 60,417. Males had a median income of $ 35,922 versus $ 30,278 for females. The per capita income was $ 35,329. 10.4 percent of the population and 6.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 11.1 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 8.0 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
