The Dolores County is a county in the southwest of the US state of Colorado . The county seat is Dove Creek .
geography
The county borders Utah on the west and is enclosed within Colorado by Montezuma County in the south, San Juan County in the east and San Miguel County in the north. Dolores County comprises a pure mountainous landscape on the Colorado Plateau of the Rocky Mountains . The east of Dolores is completely traversed by the San Juan Mountains , in which Dunton and the small town of Rico are only two smaller settlements. In a westerly direction, up to the Dolores River, which flows through the district in a north-south direction, follows a dense forest landscape that has been declared the San Juan National Forest . To the west, a region less forested from Dolores to the state line with Utah, is far from any other larger settlement Dove Creek - with around 700 inhabitants, the largest city in the district.
history
The county named after the Dolores River was formed in 1881 from the southwestern part of Ouray County , which in turn was formed in 1877 from most of San Juan County. From 1881 to 1953 Rico was the administrative seat.
