The Kit Carson County is a county in the eastern part of the state of Colorado of the United States . The county seat is Burlington .

It is enclosed in a clockwise direction by the counties of Washington (northwest), Yuma , Sherman and Wallace to the east (both Kansas), Cheyenne (south) and Lincoln to the west. The county has borders to the east with the US state Kansas . The former Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad runs through the county . Interstate 70 is also located here .
history
The county was formed in 1889 from parts of Elbert County and named after the soldier and Brigadier General Christopher Houston Carson ("Kit Carson") (1809–1868).

As of the 2000 census , the county had 8,011 people. There were 2990 households and 2081 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.28 percent white, 1.74 percent African American, 0.51 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 9.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.91 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.67 percent of the total population.
Of the 2,990 households, 33.6 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 6.3 percent were single mothers. 30.4 percent were not families. 27.2 percent were single households and 12.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.07.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.7 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 112.2 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 112.1 males.
The median income for a household in the 33,152 USD , and the median income for a family was 41,867 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,700 versus $ 19,978 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,964. 12.1 percent of the population and 9.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 16.6 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 11.1 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
