Montrose is a small town in Montrose County in the US state of Colorado , which had about 19,100 inhabitants in of 2010. Montrose is a Home Rule Municipality and County Seat of Montrose County.

The geographic coordinates of Montrose are 38 ° 29 ′  N , 107 ° 52 ′  W (38.476952, −107.865544). Montrose is on US Highway 50 , which crosses the United States from west to east. US Highway 550 branches off here as a feeder towards Albuquerque .

history

Montrose was incorporated as a city on May 2, 1882. It was named after Sir Walter Scott's Legend of Montrose . The construction of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad westwards towards Grand Junction reached Montrose later in 1882 and Montrose became an important transshipment point, as a branch line branched off from here to the south to serve the mineral-rich San Juan Mountains .

In 1909, the Gunnison Tunnel was opened, through which water from the Gunnison River in the Black Canyon was led into the Uncompahgre Valley for agriculture for irrigation.

Today Montrose is the starting point for visitors to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park east of the city and, in winter, to the ski resorts in the San Juan Mountains. Through the winter sports tourism is Regional Airport Montrose Regional Airport especially busy during the winter. Only the connection to Denver is served all year round, the flights to other destinations are only offered seasonally.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, 12,344 people lived in the city. The population density was 415.5 people per km ². There were 5581 housing units at an average of 187.9 per km ². The population of Montrose was 89.01% White , 0.444% Black or African American , 0.98% Native American , 0.58% Asian American , 0.07% Pacific Islander , 6.55% reported belonging to other races and 2.38% named two or more races. 17.36% of the population declared to be Hispanics or Latinos of any race.

The residents were distributed to 5244 households out of which 28.2% were living in children under 18 years. 49.8% of households were married, 10.2% had a female head of household without a husband, and 36.7% were not families. 31.9% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 16.2% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.88 people.

The urban population was distributed among 23.9% minors, 7.2% 18–24 year olds, 25.8% 25–44 year olds, 22.5% 45–64 year olds and 15.3% aged 65 and over or more. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were 90.8 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 87.2 men.

The median household income in Montrose was 33,750 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 42,017 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 30,674 compared to $ 21,067 for women. The per capita income for Montrose was $ 18,097. 14.7% of the population and 11.3% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 19.9% ​​of minors and 9.8% of those aged 65 and over.
