Lake Charles is a city (with a status of " City ") and the administrative seat of Calcasieu Parish in the US state of Louisiana . In 2016 Lake Charles had 76,848 residents.
The city is an important location for petrochemicals and gambling (5 casinos on river boats and a "Las Vegas Style" casino in the Hotel L'Auberge du Lac) and has a university ( McNeese State University ).

Lake Charles is located in southwest Louisiana on the banks of the Calcasieu River and borders Lake Charles and Prien Lake. The Texas border is 50 km to the west.
The geographical coordinates of Lake Charles are 30 ° 12'53 "north latitude and 93 ° 12'31" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 110.1 km², which is spread over 104.1 km² of land and 6 km² of water.

The port of Lake Charles, the sixteenth largest in the country, is connected to the Gulf of Mexico by a deep-water channel and can therefore also be reached by ocean-going vessels .
The Interstate 10 runs along the southern border of Lake Charles. US Highway 90 runs parallel to this as the main road through the city center. The US Highway 171 reaches its southern end point at the confluence with US 90. In addition, Louisiana Highways 14 , 384 and 385 meet in the Lake Charles metropolitan area. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
A railway line of the BNSF Railway runs through Lake Charles in a west-east direction . The route is also used by Sunset Limited , an Amtrak express train that runs from Los Angeles to New Orleans and makes a stop in Lake Charles.
Lake Charles has two airports. The Chennault International Airport in the east of the city serves primarily the economy, while the Lake Charles Regional Airport is on the southern city limits after passenger volume the seventh largest commercial airport in Louisiana. The nearest major international airport is the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (150 miles west).

history
The first settlers were French and in 1781 they settled near the present city. The city grew slowly in the period that followed. This changed from 1855 with the settlement of sawmills and the establishment of a port, from which a brisk timber trade with Mexico and Texas , especially with the city of Galveston , took place. Thanks to a recruitment campaign, the population grew by 400 percent in the 1880s.
Hurricane Rita
Lake Charles was badly devastated by Hurricane Rita on September 24, 2005 . Two days earlier, 90% of the city had been evacuated.
