Alibori is a department of Benin with the capital Kandi . The department was newly formed in 1999, previously the region belonged to the Borgou department. The city of Kandi has not yet been officially designated the capital, but performs all functions of the capital. The largest city in the department is Malanville on the Niger . It is named after the Alibori River that flows through it.

geography

The department is located in the north of the country and borders the Republic of Niger in the north, Burkina Faso in the northwest , the Borgou department in the south, the Atakora department in the west and Nigeria in the east .

To the north of the department lies the W National Park and the Djona hunting zone.

Ethnic groups

The most important peoples in the region are the Bariba with 32.6%, the Fulbe with 22.1% and the Dendi with 18.2% of the total population.

Religions

At the last census, 77% of the population said they were followers of Islam . In addition, 12.7% professed traditional creeds and 10.3% Christianity (almost 84% Catholics and around 6% Methodists).

Alibori was created in 1999 when it separated from the Borgou department .
