Atlantique ( German  Atlantic ) is a department of Benin with the capital Ouidah . The city has not yet been officially named the capital, but performs all functions of the capital.

geography

The department is located in the south of the country and is bordered by the Zou department to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, the Couffo department to the northwest, the Mono department to the west, the Ouémé department to the east and the Littoral department to the south-east .

At the last census in 2013, the department had 1,398,229 inhabitants.

Ethnic groups

The three largest peoples are the Aizo with 32.6%, the Fon with 28.9% of the total population and the Adja .

religion

At the last census, a majority of 58.5% professed Christianity (including 63% Catholics, 15% of the Eglise de Céleste and 4% Methodists). The Islam does not matter with a population share of 3.5%. It looks completely different with traditional religions. A total of 27.5% officially belong to the Voudou cult (unofficially, quite a few Christians are also likely to be followers of this religion at the same time).
