Donga is a department of Benin with the capital Djougou . The city has not yet been officially named the capital, but performs all functions of the capital.

geography

The department is located in the west of the country and is bordered by the Atakora department to the north, the Collines department to the south, Togo to the west and the Borgou department to the east .

At the last census in 2013, the department had 543,130 inhabitants.

Ethnic groups

The largest peoples are the Yoa with 28.5%, the Lokpa with 18.5%, the Fulbe with 11.5% and the Dendi with 5.7% of the population.

Religions

The vast majority of residents are followers of Islam (72.9%). In addition, 14.9% of the population belong to Christianity (of which around 75% are Catholics). Traditional religions have only a small following.

Donga was created in 1999 when it separated from the Atakora department .
