Prince Rupprecht Tower

The Prinz-Rupprecht-Turm stands on the western edge of the Fichtelgebirge on the 610 meter high Wolfenberg, between the villages of Gothendorf and Köslar, both are districts of Bad Berneck in the Bayreuth district . Hikers can reach the tower on the Main hiking trail from Bad Berneck about five kilometers away. Just a few meters from the tower, the hiker has beautiful views of the Fichtelgebirgsvorland, the Ochsenkopf and Schneeberg massifs and the Franconian Forest .

Tower history

In 1901, the observation tower was built by the Bad Berneck Beautification Association on the 610 meter high Wolfenberg. The originally bare hill guaranteed a wide view in all directions. When the weather was nice you could see the Plassenburg near Kulmbach, the Veste Coburg and the Rosenberg fortress near Kronach. The tower has a floor space of 24 square meters, a total height of 14 meters, with the viewing platform at a height of ten meters. Further construction data: natural stone plinth, wooden beam construction, two intermediate landings, surrounding stairs and board cladding made of larch wood. The tower was built on a small plot of land for which the owner at the time, Johann W. Küfner from Gothendorf, granted the Berneck beautification association free and unlimited heritable building rights. The tower was named in honor of the heir to the throne of the Wittelsbach prince Rupprecht (1869–1955).

In 1927 the tower and the heritable building rights were transferred from the beautification association to the property of the Fichtelgebirgsverein . The handover of the tower was free of charge, but was linked to the condition "... to keep the tower always in good condition and to ensure that it is always accessible to everyone and at all times". The supervision of the tower was entrusted to the Fichtelgebirgsverein local group in Bad Berneck. Much larger and smaller repair work was necessary in the period that followed, which was particularly difficult in the post-war years. In 1982, extensive renovation was necessary, during which, in addition to various work on the beam construction, especially the roof and the storey cornices were covered with sheet metal.

In 1999 considerable damage to the corner pillars was found. The local group decided to fix it and at the beginning of 2000, at great expense, renewed three corner pillars, various struts and the outer cladding. Total costs including own work around 45,000 DM .

The Prinz-Rupprecht-Turm is a registered monument of the Bad Bernecker district Gothendorf.
