The Main hiking trail leads 490 km from the source of the White Main on the Ochsenkopf in the Fichtel Mountains to the mouth of the Main near Mainz . The path was opened in 1971 and leads through scenic hiking areas such as the Fichtel Mountains , Franconian Switzerland , Haßberge , the Steigerwald , the Spessart and the Odenwald .

The long-distance hiking trail is marked with a blue "M".

On sections of the route, the route is identical to other routes that are more recent, e.g. B. the Franconian Marienweg (area Würzburg and Karlstadt ) or the Franconian red wine path (area Klingenberg ).
