history
Until the church is planted
The history of Altenkunstadt is closely linked to the history of the city of Burgkunstadt . It is unclear whether the mention of “Kunestat” in the 9th century refers to Burgkunstadt or Altenkunstadt. The Catholic Church of Altenkunstadt is one of the original parishes of Upper Franconia. Its foundation was probably shortly after 800, in a pre-Carolingian, that is also probably pre-Christian cemetery and thus belongs to the oldest settlement area Altenkunstadt. The first settlement in Altenkunstadt is to be assumed at the foot of the hill on which the church is located. The population was Slavic for a long time . Only gradually did the Franks penetrate this settlement area.
The place was first mentioned as "Alten-Kunstadt" in 1248. The church from 1537 had three previous buildings. For a long time it was a fortified church ; it had a wall that was used to protect and defend the population in times of war. This wall is still partially preserved. With its Kilians patronage , the church initially belonged to the diocese of Würzburg . In 1336 it was incorporated into the Langheim monastery and since then has owned the Marien-Patrozinium. The sovereignty now lay with the Bishop of Bamberg. Until the secularization in 1803, the Altenkunstadt pastors came from the Langheim monastery, to which the place was subordinate.
For centuries the house of the Messner (formerly Kirchner) was next to the church . There was also the oldest school in town, which was probably built when the church was founded. Since the pastor could hardly cope with the lessons himself because of the original size of his parish district (approx. 800 square kilometers), the office of teacher was transferred to the Kirchner. The oldest news about this comes from the year 1458, from 1517 a schedule of fees for the school has been preserved. In the beginning, the school served mainly to train boys in the service of altar boys and in choir singing. After the introduction of compulsory schooling in 1802, the elementary school was established in this building . In 1854 the house was demolished and the school moved to today's town hall.
For centuries Altenkunstadt belonged to the Bamberg Monastery and from 1500 also to the Franconian Empire . Since the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 the place belongs to Bavaria. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 . In the course of this community reform, Woffendorf and Baiersdorf were added to the community of Altenkunstadt. Industrialization began in the middle of the 19th century.

- Georg Lang, 1953 to 1969 (born May 24, 1903 in Regen, † July 16, 1976 in Altenkunstadt, local councilor and chamberlain)
A large number of Jewish families had lived in the village for a long time . In the middle of the 19th century they made up almost half of the population. The cemetery that the Jewish communities established in Burgkunstadt was correspondingly large and contains over 2000 tombstones. The synagogue from 1726, probably looted during the November pogrom in 1938 , was extensively restored from 1989 to 1993 after several years of use as a storage room for the community's waterworks and set up as a museum and meeting place. A permanent exhibition on the former women's gallery recalls the history of the Jews in the upper Main Valley.
Incorporations
On January 1, 1972, part of the previously independent municipality of Pfaffendorf was incorporated. Zeublitz was added on July 1, 1972. Maineck followed on January 1, 1974. A merger of Altenkunstadt with Burgkunstadt, originally planned by Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss , could - according to reports from those involved - be prevented by direct intervention by Mayor Fred Hermannsdörfer with Interior Minister Bruno Merk.

The blazon reads: “Split by silver and blue; at the front two blue bars, covered with a sloping red wavy bar; behind a golden chalice with a golden abbot growing from it . ”These two elements reflect Altenkunstadt's political affiliation. In the front half of the coat of arms you can see the family coat of arms of the Marschälken von Kunstadt, who have been wealthy in the town for centuries . The rear half is based on the coat of arms of the Langheim monastery , which owned substantial property in Altenkunstadt from 1336 to 1803 and was the local church patron.
