geography

Geographical location

Marktzeuln is a market town that lies in the northern part of Upper Franconia above the Rodach estuary, between the Kulbitzberg and the Spitzberg, in the Lichtenfels district and has 1650 inhabitants with the districts of Zettlitz and Horb. According to its historical form of settlement, Marktzeuln is a typical clustered village. It is considered one of the most beautiful half-timbered locations in Franconia . Artful carving and classic wood structure adorn the winding rows of houses in the village center. The staggered half-timbered buildings along the Rodachufer mostly date from the 17th century. The Gothic-Baroque parish church (15th – 17th centuries) and the baroque half-timbered town hall dominate the townscape, which has been registered as an ensemble in the Bavarian list of monuments since 1975 . Marktzeuln is located on the Rodach River , on which there are two mills at a weir, the Angermühle (left, an art mill until the 1950s) and the Heinzenmühle (right, today a hydroelectric power station).

Districts

history

Until the 18th century

Marktzeuln, which has around 1660 inhabitants, was founded by the Thuringian-Franconian in the middle of the eighth century and is one of the oldest villages on the Upper Main. The name Zeuln, from the Old High German cyl , means thicket or bushes . Zeuln (Cylen) is accordingly to be defined as a settlement on the banks of the Rodach. In 1070, Cylen was first mentioned in a traditional note by Bishop Hermann I of Bamberg about a deed of donation from Countess Alberada von Banz, with which she transferred Cylen and six other localities to the Bamberg bishopric. In Bamberger Urbar A it says 1327 with regard to the manorial rule of the Bamberg bishop: "Episcopalis est Zeuln". All rights, titles and privileges were granted to Zeuln by the prince-bishops of Bamberg, whose state was Zeuln from 1070 to 1803: in 1348 communal independence with its own mayor, fishing law, hunting law and customs law, 1402 the brewing license, 1497 the fortified fortifications of the place, around 1500 the village order including lower jurisdiction, seal law and coat of arms law (upright black owl sitting on a green branch on a white background), 1523 the market law , 1576 to 1578 the first town hall, 1630, 1682 and 1706 two further markets each, 1689 bis 1695 the second town hall. The prince-bishops of Würzburg, whose diocese was Zeuln from 741 to 1808, privileged the place by allowing the building of their own church around 1330, an early Mass in 1416, a parish vicarie in 1482, an independent parish in 1510 and the parish church from 1699 to 1701 expanded with a new representative nave.

19th to 21st century

During the Bavarian period (from 1803) Zeuln, which was officially called Markt-Zeuln from 1811 and Markt Marktzeuln from 1889, had the rank of an urban municipality from 1818 to 1827 and has since been assigned to the municipal class of markets. The population was 1026 in 1840. In 1980 the Hochstadt-Marktzeuln administrative community was formed. Ecclesiastically, the Zeulner St. Michaels parish has belonged to the diocese since 1808 and to the archdiocese of Bamberg since 1817. The parish consists of the parish of Marktzeuln and the subsidiary village of Zettlitz. In 2010 Marktzeuln celebrated the 500th anniversary of the parish. 2020 will be the 950th anniversary of the first documentary mention and in 2023 the 500th anniversary of the market survey.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1977, the previously independent community of Zettlitz was incorporated with the districts of Zettlitz and Horb.

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population decreased slightly from 1530 to 1525 by 5 or 0.3%. On December 31, 2003, Marktzeuln had 1786 inhabitants.

Regular events

  • Every second Sunday of the month, one of the largest goods markets in the area takes place in the village. Many Fieranten offer goods from fruits and vegetables to clothing, housewares and toys.
  • On the Corpus Christi festival and the evening before, the Musikverein Marktzeuln organizes its annual music festival in the beer garden of the club's own music center.
  • At the end of June, the "Zeulner Freischießen" shooting festival takes place on the fairground at the old shooting house. This fairground is popular because of its population of old chestnut trees that provide shade for visitors. For free shooting, the rifle club builds a wooden bridge over the Rodach, over which the visitors get to the rides on the other side of the river.
  • On the second weekend in August (Friday to Sunday) the volunteer fire brigade organized the so-called Rodachfest on the love island in the riverbed of the Rodach. The fountain installed in the middle of the river was illuminated in color at night. Due to a lack of staff, the fire brigade can no longer hold the festival for the time being.
  • All regular festivals in Marktzeuln take place without a tent.
