Synagogue in Altenkunstadt

The synagogue in Altenkunstadt , a municipality on the Upper Main in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels , was built in 1726. The secluded synagogue at Judenhof 3 is a protected architectural monument .

history

The synagogue in its present form was built as a sandstone square in 1726. The year the synagogue was built was also immortalized on the wedding stone. A replica of this formerly 64 × 42 cm wedding stone was attached to the south-west facade of the building next to the entrance around 1990 because the old one was weathered beyond recognition. The location of the synagogue in the Judenhof, in a small cul-de-sac next to the main street, can be explained by contemporary regulations, according to which synagogues were never allowed to stand in the town center and on streets where processions took place until well into the 18th century . Conflicts between Jews and Christians should thus be prevented.

During November 1938 pogrom , the interior and the religious objects were from SA -members under the leadership of the NSDAP - district leader Lorenz Kraus destroyed. The synagogue was preserved and became the property of the commune in 1939. During the Second World War the building was used as accommodation for prisoners of war.

After several years of use as a storage room for the waterworks , the former synagogue was extensively restored from 1989 to 1993 and set up as a museum and cultural meeting place. A permanent exhibition on the women's gallery reminds us of the history of the Jews in the upper Main Valley .

Geniza

During the renovation, a geniza was found in the attic of the former synagogue , the oldest fragment of which (a biblical commentary printed in Venice) dates from 1566.
