The former synagogue in Ermreuth , a district of the market Neunkirchen am Brand in the Upper Franconian district of Forchheim , was built at Wagnergasse 8 between 1819 and 1822.

history

Since the membership of the Jewish community in Ermreuth had increased at the beginning of the 19th century, the synagogue built in 1738 had to be replaced by a new building. The new synagogue, designed by master mason Conrad M. Wörner, was inaugurated in 1822.

Because education and migration of Jewish families was not in 1930 minyan (ten religion mature Jewish men) more available to church services to celebrate.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was desecrated, the furnishings and rituals destroyed, but the building was not set on fire. On August 31, 1953, the synagogue was transferred to the Free State of Bavaria and the latter sold the building to Raiffeisenbank Ermreuth in 1954 . Until it was sold to the municipality of Neunkirchen am Brand in 1974, the building was used as a storage room and was converted for it.

In November 1989, the Forchheim district founded a special purpose association for the renovation and maintenance of this structure. After major restoration work , the ceremonial reopening of the former synagogue took place on June 19, 1994. It now serves as a meeting place: A permanent exhibition on Jewish life in the country was set up on the gallery and in the stairwell, using the example of Ermreuth. The objects on display all come from the geniza in the attic of the synagogue.
