General view of the synagogue in Reckendorf

The former synagogue in Reckendorf , a community in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg , was built from 1727 and is located in the center (Ahornweg 3), north of the church.

history

A prayer room was set up in Reckendorf by the end of the 17th century at the latest. The synagogue , which still exists today, was built from 1727 to 1732 . After renovations in the meantime, a comprehensive renovation took place in 1851. The baroque furnishings were removed and the interior redesigned, while the floor level was raised at the same time.

Regular worship was no longer possible since the mid- 1920s because the minyan no longer took place. Valuable rituals of the synagogue were brought to Bamberg as early as 1927, but they were destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 .

time of the nationalsocialism

On November 10, 1938, SA people came from Bamberg to burn down the synagogue in Reckendorf. They smashed the interior of the synagogue and the debris was burned outside of the location. The synagogue was not set on fire, but the homes of the Jewish residents were devastated.

The synagogue building came into the possession of the political community in July 1939 and was used as a prison camp during the Second World War . Therefore, a false ceiling was put in at the height of the women's gallery. From 1952 a shoe factory and then a stove factory moved into the building. Eventually it was used as a warehouse for the Reckendorfer Schlossbrauerei .

Current condition

In 2001, the Reckendorf community bought the former synagogue and after several years of renovation work, the former Reckendorf synagogue was opened in 2005 as a House of Culture .

Geniza

During the renovation work, a geniza with thousands of objects was discovered. These consist of textile and leather scraps, Torah pennants from the 17th century and literary finds, including parchment from the 15th century. Some of the finds have been on display for a long time in the Jewish Museum in Fürth and in the Franconian Switzerland Museum in Tüchersfeld .

exhibition

In the summer of 2007, a permanent exhibition was opened in the Reckendorf synagogue, including selected pieces from the geniza. The exhibition is located on the women's gallery.
