Synagogue in Memmelsdorf

The synagogue in Memmelsdorf , a district of the Untermerzbach community in the Lower Franconian district of Haßberge ( Bavaria ), was built in 1728/29. The synagogue at Judengasse 6 is a protected architectural monument .

history

The master builder of the sandstone block building with a floor plan of 13 by 13 meters was probably Johann Georg Salb, who also renovated the Protestant parish church in Memmelsdorf in 1722. The building has been changed again and again over the long period of use.

On the north side of the main room was the apartment for the Jewish teacher, above it the women's gallery , whose large windows covered with wooden ornamental grilles gave a view into the prayer room.

From May 1938, the Jewish community negotiated the sale of the building. On November 10, 1938 , SA men forced the male members of the Jewish community to tear all movable objects out of the synagogue and burn them in a field in front of the village. The building itself was not destroyed because of its proximity to surrounding houses. On August 10, 1939, the Jewish community sold the synagogue building to the Memmelsdorf community. Of the interior, only the stone Torah shrine survived the devastation.

After 1945 the building was initially empty. The women's gallery served as an apartment until 1968, the former teacher's apartment was used as a storage room. In 1968, the owner of the neighboring property at Judengasse 8 acquired the synagogue building and used it as a storage room.

In 1993 the support and support association Synagoge Memmelsdorf (Ufr.) EV was founded, which was able to acquire the building two years later. From 1998 to the summer of 2004 the building was renovated.

Geniza

The Memmelsdorf geniza was discovered between 1979 and 1982 in the cavities between the ceiling that was added later and the roof above the main synagogue room. The main part was found on the east side above the Torah shrine.

Exhibits from the Memmelsdorf Genisa made up 20 percent of an exhibition of the Hidden Legacy Foundation in London, which was on view between 1993 and 1996 in many German and European cities, in Jerusalem and in the USA. In addition to these already restored exhibits, around 40 other archive boxes with writings and textiles are stored in the Jewish Documentation Center in Würzburg.

Objects from the Genisa are exhibited in the information room of the Memmelsdorf synagogue.
