Inscription on the Jewish community and cultural center Shalom Europa

Shalom Europa is a Jewish community and cultural center that opened in 2006 and was built by the Jewish community of Würzburg and the Lower Franconia district together with the Initiativkreis in the Altstadt district.

Historical background

Culture always also means a culture of remembrance. The old Jewish community in Würzburg is also anchored in such a “cultural memory”. The same applies to the second half of the 19th century, when the Jews in Würzburg and their rabbi, the "Würzburger Rav" Seligmann Bär Bamberger , fought against Jewish reform efforts. Such memories serve as a guide in a museum for the presentation of traditional Jewish life in our time.

Objective and conception

Visitors can learn what Orthodox Judaism means. No cultural and historical values are presented, but the continuity of the Jewish tradition. Video recorders and holograms are more important than ritual objects. Equipped with modern pedagogical means and controlled by the “Judensteinen”, a modern and at the same time traditional Jewish life is shown. This conception of a Jewish “experience house” is so far unique in Europe.
