Synagogue in Gleusdorf

The synagogue in Gleusdorf , a district of the Lower Franconian community of Untermerzbach in the Haßberge district , was built in the mid-19th century. It is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

history

A Jewish community emerged in Gleusdorf in the 16th and 17th centuries. Century. In the 1830s, about 45 Jews lived in the village, which was around 16% of the population. In 1871 the rural community of Gleusdorf had 383 inhabitants, including 31 Jews.

In order to finance a synagogue, a collection approved by the Bavarian King was carried out in the Bavarian Jewish communities in 1855. As a result, probably in 1856/57, the synagogue was built and inaugurated in the neo-Gothic style as a single-storey sandstone block with a gable roof . A departure of the community members in 1909 led to the dissolution of the Jewish community. The synagogue building was sold to a neighbor who was contractually not allowed to use it as a stable. The structure of the building, which is essentially preserved, still has the blue paint on the inside and traces of the Torah shrine .

In 2016, the Untermerzbach community acquired the former synagogue and the neighboring building, the former Jewish school. Both buildings were recently used for agricultural purposes and are to be put to public use after renovation and renovation measures with the help of the European Regional Development Fund .
