The Franconian Switzerland Museum (abbreviation: FSMT ) in Tüchersfeld is a regional museum that provides a comprehensive overview of Franconian Switzerland on approx. 800 m² of exhibition space, spread over 43 rooms . The museum is located in a scenic location below towering limestone cliffs in the so-called Judenhof, an ensemble of buildings erected in place of the Lower Tüchersfeld Castle that was destroyed in the Thirty Years War .

History and description

The museum opened on July 24, 1985. One focus is the geology of Franconian Switzerland. The formation of the layers of the Jura is explained in detail. A large aquarium impressively conveys the world of the sponge reefs of the White Jura ( Malm ). The completely redesigned archaeological department shows tools from the Neanderthals and explains the Neolithic and Metal Ages , i.e. the Bronze Age and Iron Age , in detail using finds. The numerous finds on the Reisberg near Scheßlitz are outstanding . More recent excavation finds and a model of Neideck Castle (this shows its appearance around 1400) illustrate everyday life in the Middle Ages.

In the historical exhibition, the special processes of the historical development in the region - which can only be explained due to the small size - are brought closer. In particular, the religious structure of Franconian Switzerland and the manorial situation in this area that can be read from it is conveyed. The highlights here are the coat of arms calendar of the Frankish imperial knighthood as well as a large-format map from the time of the Seven Years' War , in which the incursion of Prince Heinrich into Franconia is shown in great detail with numerous maps.

You can get an impression of previous living conditions in the “Living” and “Working Methods” departments. Handicraft tools as well as an introduction to the guild organization make the second main branch of the population - the handicraft - clear. Costumes, evidence of customs and popular piety help to complete the picture. The original synagogue from the 18th century, which is separately accessible in the museum , and the well-explained cult devices exhibited in the women's prayer room give an insight into the religious life and tradition of Jewish rural communities in Franconian Switzerland.

The museum was run for many years by the geologist Donat Kamphausen.

Numerous special events (lectures, seminars, folk music events, handicraft demonstrations, special exhibitions, theater, concerts, historical handicraft market, etc.) complement the permanent exhibition. In addition to the various collections, the museum offers two exhibitions each year which do not necessarily relate to regional topics. The program is available at any time on the museum's website.
