Carnies profile

The karnies ( Italian cornice frieze or frame) is a decorative element in architecture . It is also known as a bell bar and has a concavo-convex (i.e. S-shaped) profile shape. The convex part is called the rod, the concave part is called the throat.

A distinction is made between the following types of carnies:

  • bearing
  • crowning it
  • increasing
  • falling

The load-bearing carnies serves as an intermediate link, while the crowning carnies serves as the upper end of a cornice . With column capitals one often finds the rising carnies at the upper end. Conversely, the falling carnies is arranged at the lower end of a column capital.
