Judenhof (Altenkunstadt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Judenhof in Altenkunstadt , a community on the Upper Main in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels in Bavaria , was the center of Jewish life in Altenkunstadt for centuries. Jewish families had lived in the village since the 13th century .

The grounds of the Judenhof were originally a royal and later episcopal property. The Lords of Schaumberg had this as a fief since 1447 at the latest . The settlement of Jews on the farm is first recorded in 1596, but it probably goes back to the Middle Ages . Jews also lived in other parts of the village, which in the 19th century had a population that was half Jewish. The Jewish community's important buildings were located in the Judenhof : synagogue , schoolhouse with teacher's apartment and mikveh , poor house and the slaughterhouse .

After many Jewish families emigrated in the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Christian families moved into many Jewish homes.
