Baiersdorf (dialect Baschdoff) is a village with 425 inhabitants and part of the municipality of Altenkunstadt in the district of Lichtenfels .

Geographical location

Baiersdorf is located in a valley between Woffendorf and the Brand-Berg in the Weismain district of Geutenreuth . Neighboring towns are Prügel , Woffendorf, Weismain and Altenkunstadt . The center of Altenkunstadt is located around two kilometers north of Baiersdorf.

history

Baiersdorf was first mentioned in writing in 1112 as "Beirstorf". This was followed by further mentions as "Baeiresdorf" in 1123 and 1124 as "Beirestorf" in a deed of donation in which a "Luitpold von Baiersdorf", knight of the bishop of Bamberg, is listed as a witness. The spelling “Bayerstorf” has been handed down from the year 1408.

In the Middle Ages, the church belonged to Weismain. In 1820 the parish to Altenkunstadt took place. The school-age children continued to attend school in Weismain.

Since 1750, Baiersdorf was an independent municipality with its own municipal code from the Weismain office, until it was incorporated into Altenkunstadt in 1818. Decisive for the choice of the municipality seat was not the number of inhabitants, but the number of properties. Since Altenkunstadt, with 128 properties, was significantly larger than the other parts of the municipality Baiersdorf (41 properties), Kienmühle (7 properties) and Röhrig with Woffendorf (26 properties), Altenkunstadt became the seat of the newly formed Altenkunstadt community .

At the end of the 19th century, the small village chapel was demolished and a new, larger chapel was built in the same place, but it was demolished again in the first half of the 20th century. The current chapel was built in 1953 at a different location.

In July 2013, of the 425 inhabitants, around 83% (353) were Roman Catholic, around 12% (53) were Protestant and around 5% (19) were of other faith or non-denominational.

etymology

The basic word "village" is of Old High German origin and, unlike today's word, could also mean farm or country estate. The qualifier, the first syllable, is derived from the personal name “Beieri”, “Beir”, “Beier” or the old high German tribal name “ Baier ”, from which the personal names in question are derived. The connecting “s” in the word marks the genitive singular in both cases . In the local variety of the Upper Franconian dialect , the place name is [ ˈbāš.dǫf ], pronounced “ˈb aa schdoff”.
