Atakora is a department of Benin with the capital Natitingou .

geography

The department is located in the northwest of the country and borders on Burkina Faso in the north, the Donga department in the south, Togo in the west , the Alibori department in the northeast and the Borgou department in the southeast .

population

In the last census in 2013, the department counted 772,262 inhabitants.

Ethnic groups

The largest peoples are the Bariba with 19.1%, the Berba with 14.2%, the Ditamari with 11.0%, the Natemi with 9.9%, the Fulbe with 9.8% and the Otamari with 4.9 % % Of the total population.

religion

In contrast to the other regions of North Benin, followers of Islam are only a minority at 23.9%. Christianity has roughly the same number of members (exactly 24.0%) (including around 82% Catholics). Thus around half of the population still professes traditional creeds.
