Littoral ( German coast ) is a department of Benin with the capital Cotonou , of which the department consists exclusively.
geography
The department is located in the south of the country and borders the department Atlantique to the north and west , the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the Ouémé department to the east .

Ethnic groups
The largest peoples are the Fon with 32.9% and the Gun with 15.2% of the population. There are also numerous Adja and Joruba .
Religions
The vast majority of 75.7% of the residents profess Christianity (of which 76% are Catholics and 16% are African Independent Churches). The Islam is represented with 14.2% share of the population. Traditional religions (officially) no longer play a major role.

Littoral was created in 1999 when it separated from the Atlantique department .
