Ouémé is a department of Benin with the capital Porto-Novo .

geography

The department is located in the south-east of the country and borders in the north with the department Zou , in the south with the Atlantic , in the west with the departments Atlantique and Littoral , in the north-east with the department Plateau and in the south-east with Nigeria .

Ethnic groups

The largest races are the Gun with 32.9%, the Oueme with 22.0% and the Fon with 15.4%. There are also numerous Joruba and Adja .

Religions

Today, Christianity forms the majority of the population with 67.0% (including 55% Catholics, 18% of the Eglise de Céleste and 12% other members of African Independent Churches). Larger minorities are the followers of Islam with 12.1% and the Voudou cult with 11.0% of the population.
