Paine is a city in the middle of Chile . It is located in the Metropolitana region and has around 50,000 inhabitants (as of 2004).

The name of the city comes from the Mapudungun language of the Picunche Indians and means something like blue sky .

The city is located about 50 km south of Santiago de Chile on the Panamericana . It belongs to Maipo Province .

history

The area around Paine was populated very early. To the north of the city is the Inca fortress Pucará de Chena from the 15th century. The first Spaniards came to the area around Santiago de Chile with Pedro de Valdivia as early as 1541 .

On December 26, 1883, Maipo Province was founded. The Paine sub-area itself was formed on November 2, 1885. Paine Parish was established on May 6, 1900 and Paine Parish was established on December 30, 1927.

Paine is characterized by agriculture , mainly vegetables and fruit (e.g. growing watermelons ).

The Ruta Patrimonial Histórica Religiosa is a religious walking trail around Paine that includes visiting several churches.

There are many small lagoons and forests here. The Laguna de Aculeo is located six kilometers southwest of Paine . The very popular water sports area with originally 12 km² of water surface dried up completely in 2018. The high mountains Altos de Cantillana with peaks up to 2300 m high are also very popular.

Every year in February there is a folklore festival called Festival de la Sandía de Paine .
