Westlake is located in southwest Louisiana on the banks of the Calcasieu River , not far from its confluence with Calcasieu Lake . The Texas border is around 50 km to the west. The urban area extends over an area of 6 km².
Neighboring towns to Westlake are Moss Bluff (13.8 km northeast), Lake Charles (on the opposite bank of the Calcasieu River on the southeastern outskirts) and Sulfur (12.8 km west).

A BNSF Railway runs parallel to I 10 through Westlake. The route is also used by Sunset Limited , an Amtrak express train that runs from Los Angeles to New Orleans and makes a stop in neighboring Lake Charles to the east.
