Earl Nelson (singer)
Earl Lee Nelson (born September 8, 1928 in Lake Charles , Louisiana , † July 12, 2008 in Los Angeles ) was an American singer and songwriter of rhythm and blues , who also appeared as Jackie Lee .
Life
Nelson sang in the church choir as a child; In 1937 his family moved to Los Angeles. At the age of 17 he did his military service in the US Army in the Panama Canal Zone . After his discharge from the army, he sang in various doo-wop and R&B groups in the Los Angeles area , collaborating with singer Bobby Byrd in his formations Bobby "Baby Face" Byrd & the Birds and Bobby Day & the Satellites . 1957 Byrd and Nelson had first hit successes with the vocal group The Hollywood Flames ( Buzz, Buzz, Buzz ); This was followed by titles such as Two Things I Love as The Voices in 1955 , I Bow on You with the Pelican Singers in 1957 and Come On / No Time To Cry on Ebb Records (1959).
Already in 1957 the duo Bob & Earl produced the first single with Bobby Relf, You Made a Boo-Boo , followed by singles such as Don't Ever Leave Me and Deep Down Inside for various small labels such as Tempe. In December 1959, Every Day, Every Way was written for Atco Records . The greatest success of the duo Bob & Earl was the song Harlem Shuffle , written by Relf and Nelson and arranged by Barry White , produced by Fred Smith. It was based on a number called Slauson Shuffletime by the singer Round Robin. Harlem Shuffle became a hit on the R&B charts and influenced later R&B duos like Sam and Dave . In 1969 the record was successfully re-released in Great Britain and entered the top ten ; The Rolling Stones covered him in 1985 . In 2003, the Daily Telegraph music critics recorded the original Bob & Earl song at # 23 on their list of 50 Best Duets Ever .
Other songs by the duo such as My Woman, Your Lovin 'Goes a Long, Long Way and Baby I'm Satisfied could not follow on from their earlier successes. In 1965 Nelson began a solo career with the single Ooh Honey Baby . The singer came in the late 1960s as Jackie Lee in the top 20 with the song The Duck ; also other Jackie Lee titles such as Do the Temptation Walk , The Shotgun and the Duck, Oh! My Darlin ' and Darkest Days were favorites in the UK as part of the Northern Soul Revival of the 1970s and 1980s. A few more singles for ABC-Paramount and Uni followed; with Barry White was created in 1974 for Warner Bros. Strange Funky Games and Things . He died in Los Angeles in July 2008 of complications from Alzheimer's disease .
