Gypsum is a city of Eagle County in the US -amerikanischen State Colorado .
geography
Gypsum is located at 439 ° 38'40 "north latitude and 106 ° 56'25" west longitude. The closest major city is Denver , 150 kilometers to the east. The winter sports resort of Vail is in the east and is 50 kilometers away. The Interstate 70 highway runs through the city .
History
The German William Schliff is considered to be the first settler to settle in the area in 1881. More settlers followed. After the Denver and Rio Grand Railroad led into the place, there was already a post office, various shops and businesses as well as restaurants and saloons in 1888 . The area of today's city was popular because of its rich wildlife. In 1905 even Theodore Roosevelt went hunting there. The city experienced with its pursuit of gypsum deposits ( gypsum ) an upswing and the company Eagle Gypsum Limited (now American Gypsum ) began the product in open pit ( open-pit mining ) to promote. The discovery of gypsum eventually gave the city its name. American Gypsum is still the city's main employer today .
Demographic data
In 2009 a population of 6299 people with an average age of 30.3 years was determined. Compared to the year 2000 there was an increase in the number of inhabitants of 72.4%. The proportion of the population with German descent is almost 20% and thus constitutes the largest group of residents.
