Santa Maria delle Carceri (Monte Subiaso)

Santa Maria delle Carceri is a small Roman Catholic church in a steep forest gorge on Monte Subasio , in Umbria , central Italy , above Assisi .

Originally there was only a small chapel near a grotto at this point , to which hermits ( hermits ) retired to pray. At the beginning of the 13th century it was often visited by St. Francis of Assisi .

The construction of the church and a small convent called Eremo delle Carceri was commissioned by Saint Bernardine of Siena in 1400 .

Today Franciscans live in the small monastery and celebrate Holy Mass in this church .
