Monte Subasio

The Monte Subasio is a mountain of the Apennine Mountains in central Italy in Umbria .

geography

The Monte Subasio is located in the mountain range of the Appennino umbro-marchigiano above the city of Assisi , in the vicinity of the towns of Spello and Nocera Umbra , which are connected to Assisi via the Parco del Monte Subasio , which extends in the valley of the Valle Umbra . The towns of Bastia Umbra , Torgiano and Valtopina also belong to the Comunità montana Monte Subasio .

The summit reaches a height of about 1290  m slm

history

The city of Assisi was built entirely from the white and pink stones of the mountain, which also provided wood for the inhabitants with its forests. The Fontemaggio spring , which rises on the mountain, supplied the city with drinking water in Roman times.

nature

It is a peak that is mostly flat and characterized by karst phenomena . For this reason it differs from the steep slopes in the east. The Subasio tree population can be divided into three zones: the first is characterized by olive trees , the cultivation of which extends from Assisi to Spello on one side and from Costa di Trex to Armenzano and San Giovanni on the other. The second area is oaks , oak , black hornbeam , manna ash , maple trees and houses and oaks marked. The third area is characterized by resinous high forests and summit meadows. The whole area is inhabited by only a few animals: wolves , golden eagles and stone hens .

In recent times the partridge , wild cat , squirrel , wood pigeon , magpie , jay , porcupine , badger , fox , weasel , stone marten and wild boar are reproducing again through nature conservation measures .

Parco del Monte Subasio Natural Park

The Monte Subasio Natural Park includes not only the mountain of the same name, but also the peaks of the mountains Civitelle , Sermolla and the hills of San Rufino and Pietralunga . This area borders on the Tescio River to the north, the Chiona torrent to the northeast, the Topino Valley to the east and the mountainous area that connects Assisi with Spello to the southwest.

A remarkable phenomenon of the park are the sinkholes of Mortaro Grande . The Franciscan path ( sentiero Francescano ) and the botanical garden in Valtopina , the thermal baths in Centino and the holm oak forest at the Eremo delle Carceri ( inghiottitoio dell'Orrido delle Carceri ) near Assisi also convey nature experiences .
