The Topino is a 77 km long river in Umbria , Italy . In ancient times it was first known under the Umbrian name Supunna , later as Timia or Tinia ( Greek  Τενέας Teneas ) in Latin.

course

The river arises on Monte Pennino near Nocera Umbra in the Bagnara district in the Sorgenti del Topino (springs of the Topino). Then it turns southwest and flows through Valtopina . At Capodacqua (Località Pieve Fanonica, contains a Roman viaduct documented in 1138, but probably older and partially destroyed ), it reaches the municipality of Foligno and passes through Ponte Centesimo (also Pontecentèsimo). In the district of Vescia (before or north of the center of Foligno) the Menotre is added as a left tributary. In the center of Foligno the river Albegna joins from the left. After the city center it crosses the districts of Corvia, Scafali and Budino and then enters the municipality of Bevagna , which it only touches north for a short time. Shortly before Cannara , the Teverone and the Clitunno enter on the left . After the center of Cannara the river Ose flows in from the right. North of Passaggio (district of Bettona ) the river serves the Chiascio as a left tributary and after about 5 km it goes into the Tiber in Torgiano .

The topino in literature

The topino is mentioned in Dante Alighieri's divine comedy in Paradise in lines 43 to 47 of the eleventh cant of Paradiso :

Intra Tupino e l'acqua che discende del colle eletto dal beato Ubaldo, fertile costa d'alto monte pende, onde Perugia sente freddo e caldo, da Porta Sole; e di rietro le piange, per grave giogo Nocera con Gualdo .

By the brook that rises from Ubaldo's hill
And the Tupino, rises, between the two,
A mountain with a fertile green slope.
Perugia must suffer from heat and frost from him,
And Gualdo is close behind this mountain
