history

main place

Called Lacus Umber by the Romans , the place was created in 1162 by Count Conte Valerio Ranieri , who fled Perugia from Frederick I. The name comes from the Italian word Canna (dt. Pile cane or reed). In the 13th century the place became an independent municipality and placed itself under Perugia in order to find protection from Assisi . Perugia interrupted the siege of the place by Assisi in 1291. The city walls were expanded by Perugia around 1380. In 1424 the parish was fiefdom of the Baglioni family until 1648, after which the place was part of the Papal States until 1861. After the unification of Italy in 1861, the population rose from approx. 2400 to approx. 3850 in 1951. After a brief low in the 1970s the population rose to around 4300 by 2010.

Collemancio district

Collemancio is 507 meters above sea level and has about 80 inhabitants. The district is located around 5 km southwest of the main town and a few meters from the ancient town of Urvium Hortense (part of the Regio VI Umbria of Augustus ). The place was first mentioned in writing in 1224, when Pope Honorius III. gave the fortified place Collismanci to the Bishop of Assisi. In the 14th century the Palazzo del Podestà was built and in 1377 the town of Perugia submitted to it. Antipope John XXIII. awarded the place to the Trinci in 1413 , with whom it remained until 1431. The Baglioni family from Cannara took over the fortunes of the place in 1436 until 1648, which then remained closely connected to Cannara. Collemancio has been officially part of the municipality of Cannara since 1870.

economy

The best-known production goods of the place is the wine Colli Martani Vernaccia , a DOC wine and the onion from Cannara ( Cipolla di Cannara ).
